About Scientist4Future NL

We, the individuals of Scientists4Future NL, are concerned about anthropogenic climate change and the ecological crisis.

We are academics motivated to actively call for a stronger response to these crises, whilst at the same time determined to maintain scientific independence.

Given the enormous challenges of the climate and ecological crises, we recognise the need for immediate and decisive action on many levels of society .

Addressing the climate and ecological emergencies requires a wide diversity of insights, knowledge and experience. We invite scientists and scholars from all disciplines (e.g. from sciences or humanities) to join us.

History

Scientists4Future NL was founded in the summer of 2019

The organisation evolved from an initiative of the Climate Cluster of the VU Amsterdam who published a public letter supporting the Amsterdam Climate March in March 2019. During the letter writing process, the idea arose to write a statement supported by all Dutch universities.

We also take knowledge and inspiration from Jan Rotmans (Professor of Transition Studies & Sustainability, Erasmus University Rotterdam), who initiated a letter of support for striking school children in February 2019, and Ernst-Jan Kuiper (Utrecht University), who gathered hundreds of signatures of concerned climate scientists but which were never published.

We gather inspiration from, and build upon previous efforts of our fellow scientists in Belgium (Scientists4Climate); Germany, Austria & Switzerland (Scientists4Future); and internationally (ScientistsForFuture). The German initiative gathered 26,800 signatures within a month, impacting national-level political debate in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Hagedorn et al., 2019).
