I am a member of S4F because I am concerned about the climate crisis, and want to activate academics to take part in this movement. Being part of this group motivates me to use my expertise, network and role in academia to fight for a better collective future.

I have been involved in water quality studies for more than 30 years, now mostly concerning coastal areas but also inland waters. Over the years I have seen the focus of such studies change between heavy metals, nutrients and emerging contaminants such medicines, pesticides, (micro)plastics and PFAS. I have also seen the problems concerning climate change and other environmental issues grow. And I am worried, not only for myself, but also for my children and grandchildren. When I first heard about studies regarding land development in, say, 2050, I thought it very, very far away. But it no longer is! My children, who are in their twenties now, will reach their middle-age in 2050, my grandchildren will only become of age then and are expected to live into the next century. That makes any predictions for the world of 2050 and 2100 come very close. Climate change and environmental problems are our own responsibilities. Therefore it is up to us to do something about it. As an individual I found it very frustrating that I could not do much about it. And that is why I joined S4F. It helps me participate in concrete actions intended to help our government, from low to high, take proper measures to counteract the negative consequences of the way we live our lives.

We are in a climate and biodiversity crisis. I joined Scientists for Future NL to contribute to a just, sustainable transition. Please join us!

As an academic, I feel a special responsibility to do something against climate change. At S4F, I feel inspired by people who have the same motivation and a wealth of skills and expertise. Together our voice can be very loud!

I felt that the changes I made and make in my personal life were not enough in the situation we’re in, and was looking for a place that has a proactive, but above all positive outlook on actions against the climate crisis. The people from S4F NL have become that place!

Scientists have a responsibility to serve society with science. In the past 30 years, we have not been successful in getting across the urgency of the climate- and ecological crisis. That is why I think a more activist approach is needed and why I joined Scientists for Future.
Martijn Duineveld
Wageningen University & Research
I am working on climate obstruction research, which exposes how governments, big industry and other actors obstruct transitions to a low-carbon society and climate justice. With S4F-NL I love organising events around this topic, both within and outside of academia.
Philipp Gramlich
Scientists4Future is a nice bunch of people who want to make an impact, are consequent in their activities while not falling into the trap to moralise.

After years spent studying sea level rise and how it will affect people in the Netherlands and worldwide, I needed to reach beyond the academic community and try to convince policymakers and the general public they we should act now. In that respect, I very much like the positive attitude of S4F: it's ok to be worried (I am), but it's even better to maintain hope in a better future!

When the realization set in that losing sleep over the climate doesn't benefit the climate any further and contributes even less to oneself and one's surroundings, I became active with Scientists4Future, in the sustainable finance working group. No regrets. Keywords: interdisciplinary collaboration, creative, passion & ambition, expanding network, professionals, inspiring.

Even though my own research is not directly concerned with the climate crisis, within Scientist for Future I am trying to help with diverse climate initiatives and in that way contribute where possible. Also, it is really nice to meet such a diverse group of scientists that have similar worries about the climate.

I believe that the climate catastrophe has become a systemic threat for all human societies, both in the long term and by increasing other major threats: economic inequality, wars, nuclear weapons, poverty, hunger, discrimination, and racism. These ills of human societies have all been significantly worsened by the risks that the climate change poses for human livability on Earth. I joined S4F because I believe that as academics we have the moral duty to encourage students and colleagues to look for ways of fighting the causes of the climate crisis, and play an active role in an open democratic society that aims to avoid or at least mitigate its disastrous outcomes.
