Welcome to S4F's October newsletter! We have a lot of news to share, as well as a small sneak peek into the agenda for Saturday's national meeting. Are you joining us in Utrecht? If you haven't yet, let us know at contact@scientists4future.nl!

5 October: in-person national meeting

Meeting on Zoom is nice and practical, but meeting in person is even nicer! That's why we're gathering in Utrecht on Saturday 5 October, for brainstorming, discussing and simply meeting with each other!

As always, the agenda is open for everyone's preferred discussion points, but we will make sure to cover the following:

  • Fossil financing in Dutch academia

  • Elsevier and its role in fossil research and publications

  • The right to protest for employees and students in Dutch academia

Join us for the meeting and the potluck afterward!

News: The Hague's ban on fossil advertising

The Hague is the first city to pass laws prohibiting fossil advertising in the city's public spaces. That includes fossil fuel products, as well as "climate-busting services" as they are called in this news article in The Guardian. No more advertising for cheap flights and cruise vacations! Let's hope other cities follow The Hague's example soon.

News: Open letter to stop fossil subsidies in the EU

Together with many other organisation, Scientists for Future NL has signed an open letter to the politicians leading the European Union. The letter asks them to deliver on the EU's promises:

  • To follow the plan it adapted in 2022, namely to set a timeline to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, and

  • To develop tools that can help keep EU member states accountable, such as clear definitions and monitoring schemes.

Find the open letter here and read more about the initiative and planned protests and actions on stopfossilsubsidies.eu

News: Onder professoren (in English)

Professor Julia Schaumburg of VU Amsterdam wrote an article for De Actuaris, the magazine of the Royal Dutch Actuarial Association, on how universities' dual responsibility puts them in an excellent position to propel climate action. But how can and should universities do so?
